The Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe (NOCEN) has a long and rich history of training teachers in Nigeria. Founded in 1973, NOCEN was established to help address the shortage of qualified teachers in the post-civil war era.

NOCEN began operations on January 29, 1973 under the leadership of the first Principal, Dr. J.U.A. Okeke. At inception, the college offered the Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in five major areas of study: English, Mathematics, Economics, Chemistry and Biology. Over time, additional departments and programs were added to meet the changing needs of Nigeria’s education system.
